Please note new extended deadline // 11.59pm BST – Sunday 1 August 2021.

Nonclassical is looking for up to three passionate and enthusiastic people to join our Board of Trustees. This is an exciting and important time in Nonclassical’s journey as we aim to build resilience, grow and look for new opportunities for the future.

Nonclassical is a music promoter, record label and events producer presenting the best new classical, experimental and electronic music. Crossing genre and defying convention, we develop, produce and promote innovative music – supporting emerging artists and bringing new music to new audiences.

Founded in 2004 by composer Gabriel Prokofiev, Nonclassical began as a clubnight focused on presenting new music in non- traditional performance spaces. We have since presented events across the UK and worldwide, and our record label is home to artists including Tansy Davies, Aïsha Orazbayeva, Gabriel Prokofiev, Langham Research Centre, Tom Richards and many more – you can see our full roster here.

In 2015, Nonclassical became a CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) and registered charity (1162282) based at Oxford House, Derbyshire Street, London E2 6HG, led by Executive Director Natalia Franklin Pierce with a small team of four part-time staff.

Our Mission

  • Develop and produce the best new classical music, pushing at the boundaries and conventions of the genre.

  • Work with a dual approach - releasing music as a label and promoting it in a live context.

  • Help new artists to develop their careers and creative output by providing the platforms, support and

    exposure they need.

  • Bring innovative new classical music to new audiences in non-traditional performance settings.

our Values

Accessible

Making the best new classical music accessible is core to our mission. We take our music to new live audiences in non-traditional settings and new listening audiences through the latest streaming technology, breaking conventions of exclusivity wherever we find them.

Collaborative

We work closely with artists and composers to nurture, curate and promote new classical music. We are open to new ideas and collaborate with artists, composers, venues, promoters and partners in all aspects of our work.

Discerning

We develop, release and promote exciting artists - but only give our support to artists who we think have an abundance of talent and something original to say; we are interested in finding, developing, releasing and promoting the best of tomorrow’s music, today.

Forward-thinking

We proactively seek out new artists and music, alongside new ways of working and promoting contemporary classical music. We welcome collaboration with contemporary cultural organisations with a similarly forward-thinking agenda.

Inclusive

We welcome and actively seek out new music from the best practitioners in the space of new classical music, across genres and regardless of age, gender, sexuality, socio-economic ethnic background or disability.

Who we’re looking for

NR 18-03-18 535.jpg

Every charity has a board of trustees - a group of volunteers who ensure that the charity is effective in carrying out the purpose for which it was set up. Trustees have responsibility for overseeing the work of the charity, ensuring it is financially stable, well-run and fulfilling its charitable obligations, although the day to day running of it is delegated to the executive team. Further information can be found on the Charity Commission website, including an essential ‘What You Need To Know As A Trustee’ guidance pack: bit.ly/ trustees-guide.

We are looking for people who enjoy working as part of a supportive, rigorous team, who are passionate about new music and its inclusivity. We seek up to three people to complement the skills and experience of the current board of seven Trustees: Michael Noonan (Chair), Yung-Yee Chen, Jessica Cottis, Matthew Gill, Brian Inglis, John Richards and Nick Rampley.

We strongly recognise that our Board has some way to go to better represent the diversity of modern Britain and therefore are proactively seeking expressions of interest from:

  • Black, Asian and Ethnically Diverse people

  • People with a lived experience of disability

  • People from the LGBTQIA+ community

  • People between 16–35 years of age

We are also seeking expertise and/or networks in specific areas including:

  • Income generation/fundraising

  • Music industry e.g. record labels and publishing working in any genre of music

  • Businesses or properties in London or the wider UK

  • Underrepresented or underserved communities in London or the wider UK

We are keen to widen the pool of prospective board candidates and particularly encourage you to apply if youare from any of these backgrounds. You do not need to have been a Trustee before to express your interest.

We are fully aware that not everyone knows what it’s like to be a trustee, nor what a board does - we hope that will not discourage you from putting yourself forward since we are happy for people to observe a few board meetings before they decide whether they want to join and will help prospective members learn about the duties and responsibilities of being a Trustee through a simple induction and ‘buddying’ with an existing board member.

Being on a Board can be incredibly rewarding - it is a brilliant way to use your skills and experience to support the arts and ‘give back’. You meet different kinds of people, learn a lot, and have access to some excellent events and releases. As a Board member, you will agree to:

  • Attend four meetings per year in London (or online) usually 4-6pm on the first Tuesday of the month in March, June, September and December, preparing beforehand.

  • Feed into setting the strategic aims for the organisation.

  • Join sub-groups on specific issues where possible. e.g. Artistic, Fundraising, Diversity & Inclusion,

    Finance or Marketing Committees.

  • Be fully up to date with the business of the company.

  • Offer timely feedback and responses for the business.

  • Attend performances and events where possible.

  • Be an ambassador and advocate for Nonclassical as appropriate.

As Nonclassical is a CIO, our Trustees have no liability for debts as per other charitable structures. Our Constitution states that Trustees are appointed for renewable ‘terms’ of three years, up to a maximum of nine years. The position is voluntary, unpaid, and non-executive. Every effort will be made to accommodate any needs to enable participation such as covering reasonable travel expenses, childcare costs, offering disabled access for meetings and flexible meeting timings.

What we value most in prospective candidates is your unique perspective and passion for music and to reach out to involve a wider community in what Nonclassical does.

How to express your interest

If you’re interested in applying, please fill in the application form linked below which includes an anonymous Equal Opportunities form.

We are committed to making the application processes as accessible as possible and are happy to provide information in alternative formats and/or answer any other questions regarding this opportunity.

Closing date for expressions of interest is 11.59pm Sunday 1 August 2021.
