Our artists will always be at the heart of everything we do.

From the very beginning, Nonclassical has been committed to giving a voice to artists who push at the boundaries of convention and question the norm. Through both our label, live events and artist development schemes, we provide a platform for music that’s not easily categorised or commodified, but makes a direct and positive impact on contemporary culture.

Since our inception in 2004, we have released over 50 records, produced large scale events and mentored a number of emerging artists, many of whom continue to make a vital impact on the music scene:

  • Composer Freya Waley-Cohen was a member of our Associate Composer Scheme in 2016 and has since been commissioned by international orchestras, promoters and organisations, including the LA Philharmonic and the BBC Proms.

  • Electronic musician Tom Richards featured on our first Outside the Lines release in 2017 and has performed around the world, including the Royal Albert Hall and Festival Música Estranha, Brazil.

  • The Hermes Experiment performed one of their first sets at our annual Battle of the Bands competition in 2014 and have since gone on to become a renowned ensemble on the new music scene, having been shortlisted in the 2019 Royal Philharmonic Society Awards.

Artist development will always be at the centre of all our activity. We have three key initiatives to ensure we are giving a voice to the diverse musical community the UK has to offer:

Nonclassical AiRs (2021-22) from L-R: Atefeh Einali, Elischa Kaminer, Emily Abdy and Simon Knighton.

NONCLASSICAL AIR

Set up to support composers looking to take the next step in their career, Nonclassical’s AiR supports the artistic development of unsigned and unpublished early-career composers, who are creating exciting new contemporary classical, electronic and experimental music.
