With a programme placing masterpieces from the Western classical tradition alongside the non-western music that inspired them, the festival told the story of how 20th century composers put percussion at the centre of the modernist project.

Pioneers of Electronic Music// Mar 2013

Nonclassical's festival on the Pioneers Of Electronic Music that run between the 6-17 March 2013. Events included a Dirty Electronics workshop with John Richards, screenings of The Day The Earth Stood Still and Forbidden Planet, plus documentaries on Raymond Scott, and performances of work by Scott, Stockhausen, Varèse and members of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, among others.

Professor and regular Wire contributor John Richards led a 'synth lab' in which participants learn to build their own synthesiser, as part as Nonclassical's series Pioneers of Electronic Music. This approach to building a synth made for a truly hands-on, practical experience, allowing anybody to take part. All participants were also invited to perform at the XOYO Club Night.


Some highlights of Nonclassical's April 2012 night at East London nightclub XOYO, featuring a 52 piece string orchestra performing Penderecki's 'Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima', large percussion ensmeble playing Xenakis 'Pleiades', Ligeti's choral work 'Lux Aeterna' and more... + DJs Gabriel Prokofiev, Nwando Ebizie & Alex Smoke.
