Over the last 3 decades, the Remix has become a central form in the world of electronic music. In the beginning it was a simple way to release a 'disco' version of a popular song but it has now developed, in some areas, into highly sophisticated re-imaginings ('re-compositions' even) of electronic tracks and has indeed developed into an art-form.

Since their inaugural release in 2004 the Remix has become an essential element of the Nonclassical record. Ranging from edgy hip-hop to sublime ambience this album brings together a selection of the most creative remixes available to the Nonclassical label, all of which are based on contemporary classical recordings, twisted, cut-up and re-worked into a range of remarkable genre-defying pieces of music.

Remixing has not only become an integral part of the unique offering that Nonclassical presents on the label but has taken centre stage during their live DJ-sets at the Nonclassical Club Nights.

Every Nonclassical album contains a reference in the booklet to the following ‘house rule’ for remixers: "All the sounds used in every remix were created exclusively from the master recordings of the original". This strict policy imposed by Nonclassical on its remixers limiting them to only those sounds from the original master recordings and allowing them no imported beats or samples forces them to adopt a resourceful yet open- minded approach. It will continue to entice artists such as Thom Yorke, Murcoff, and Tim Exile to try their hand at making a Nonclassical remix and will ensure that the remixes continue to engage and surprise listeners for decades to follow. Also included, a previously unreleased remix by Landesvatter, Nonclassical Remix Competition 2014 Winner.

The vast sonic palette offered by contemporary chamber music may be unfamiliar territory for many electronic producers but through effects such as transposition, distortion, and compression, a ‘pizzicato’ (plucked) cello can become a tough bass drum hit. By digitally cutting off the beginning of piano chords the characteristic attack sound is removed and an unusual pulsing sound is created. With pitch-shift and reverb, bass recorder tones can become dark, subterranean drones. Music that, to some listeners seems unfamiliar and incomprehensible, can suddenly resonate when the textures are transformed into a pulsing groove. The same material can also be redirected into experimental territories, exploring new concepts of sound, music and noise

The result is a series of Nonclassical remixes that, though highly diverse, share an organic and natural sound, testament both to the talent of the remixers and also the sophistication of modern sound-processing technology. This constant invention and innovation from album to album, DJ-set to DJ-set will ensure The Art of Remix continues to break new ground whilst simultaneously maintaining Nonclassical's pioneering spirit.
