Gabriel Prokofiev is an East-London based composer, producer, and founder of the Nonclassical record label and club nights. He began his music career as a dance, grime, electro and hip hop producer, and in 2003 returned to his classical roots (Gabriel is the grandson of Sergei Prokofiev and trained in classical composition); as composer of his String Quartet No. 1. (“defies comparison”, Daily Telegraph) for the Elysian Quartet, which premiered the approach of including a selection of remixes. The desire for a new, more inclusive approach to presenting the quartet to audiences led to the beginning of Nonclassical’s now monthly club nights. Gabriel has been busy over the last few years, composing and producing an array of different music – including a Piano Book, a Suite for Global Junk, a second String Quartet, and a Concerto For Turntables and Orchestra – all housing his signature blend of electronic influences with contemporary classical sounds.
