THIS MONTH Nonclassical launches the much anticipated new release from Powerplant – the multimedia group led by young genre-trashing percussionist, Joby Burgess with visuals from Kathy Hinde performing selections from their groundbreaking commission ‘Import/Export: suite for global junk’ by Gabriel Prokofiev. In addition we have new works from the experimental music camp New Music Incubator.

POWERPLANT / G.PROKOFIEV:IMPORT / EXPORT: SUITE FOR GLOBAL JUNK.

From solo Fanta bottle to voyages through common junk objects (a wooden pallet, plastic bags, an oil drum and soda bottles), G Prokofiev’s Import/Export is a piece that brings light to today’s environmental issues without preaching. Joby Burgess and Gabriel Prokofiev began exchanging ideas for collaboration since 2006, through the process of composing, workshopping and finding a way to write for the loop-driven system that Joby set up giving brith to Import/Export.

Despite ‘Import/Export’ taking inspiration from Electroacoustic, Musique concrete, Sonic Art pioneers and beyond from Schaeffer, Stockhasen, Cage and Varese to Babaton bendi and Zawose, Burgess performs found sounds LIVE. Doing so firmly buckles erstwhile reliance on backing tracks, DAT machines and/or laptops to perform Found/Alternative sounds as ‘live music’, thereby successfully acheiving performances that are musically dynamic and truly expressive. Import/Export proves too that traditional compositional form and development can prevail using found sounds without resorting to a cut-and-paste loop-fest generated in a studio by countless mouse clicks & edits.

Swedish Exchange: artists from New Music Incubator

Endorsing the dissolving distinctions between genres of ‘high and low’ art, with two successful projects in Sweden so far, New Music Incubator provides an international creative exchange lab for performers, composers, improvisers and sound artists to explore each other’s practice and continue to develop their own through workshop environments that encourage risk-taking and opportunity to experiment with new processes and techniques. Nonclassical tonight, presents Swedish performers and composers fresh from the NMI’s most recent gathering European gathering.

NONCLASSICAL in July is heading over to the USA for a short tour to showcase two of NONCLASSICAL’s newest releases from Powerplant (Joby Burgess) and GeNIA.

IMPORT/EXPORT from Powerplant (Joby Burgess) is inspired by the pioneering composers and musicians whose use of unconventional objects has created a groundbreaking repertoire for percussion over the last century. These range from institutional greats such as Schaeffer, Stockhausen, Cage and Varese, to the Babaton bendi in Tanzania and the Zawose family in Africa whose use of these instruments derives from a necessity to make music based on the recovery of the materials around them.

Piano Book No. 1 from GeNIA connects more to the classical tradition than previous Nonclassical releases, showing that though they may present classical music in a non-classical way, Nonclassical are still interested in continuing the legacy of classical music and moving it forward. One of the aims of GéNIA and Gabriel’s collaboration was to create an intimate sounding piano album that connected to the classic recordings of the past. This led to 88.2k digital recording of a hand-picked Steinway D-Series piano which was then mastered through analogue tape and vintage valve equipment, without compression.

These two new exciting releases will be showcased amongst other material across three dates.

The shows are as follows;

These are performances not to be missed from some of NONCLASSICAL’s most exciting performers!

‘LIVE & WIRED’ (RAM)

Last month at the Horse & Groom, NONCLASSICAL accommodated one of our largest ensembles to date; The Dirty Electronics Ensemble, alongside a rare, never-to-be-repeated improvisation from Okkyung Lee and John Edwards. This month, we strip things down slightly but still promise you wires, violins and a nice healthy dose of chaos.

The Alex Nikiporenko Duo

Alex Nikiporenko fuses a variety of styles but his passion lies within improvisation and chamber music. Accompanied by his very talented drummer, Alex takes a break from being creative in residence at The Hostpital Club and composing commissions for the BBC Proms to bring us this intimate performance. Not one to miss!

World Premiere

Nonclassical are pleased to be the host for the premier performance of nine short works for violin and laptop. Performed by Aisha Orazbayeva and nine composers from RAM, the pieces explore the instrument by transforming its sound in real time and by mixing it with pre-recorded violin samples.

Live performances from 9pm and DJ sets from resident DJs Gabriel Prokofiev and Richard Lannoy throughout the night mixing contemporary classical, genre-busting remixes from the Nonclassical label and beyond.
